General Evaluation of Internship Experience
When I began my journey with BBGI, I had a very small understanding of what it was to work for such a big entertainment company. Even though I am only closely involved with the promotions department, I have still had the opportunity to be able to see what really goes on inside the studios, in addition to the behind the scenes of the before and after of event coordinating. Finding every aspect interesting, just knowing how much work actually goes into events, makes me respect every promotion and event so much more. As for the on air talents, I have come to understand how complex their jobs really are. At first I thought that they had helpers to do everything, but in all reality they do not. They write their own commercials; they edit their own pieces in between songs, and so much more.
Prior to this internship, I had helped organize various events for the school and during a previous job as well. However, nothing compared to such events that I am currently working on. Yes, back then I had a sense of organization, yet not one for the advertisement and promotional aspects of a corporation such as BBGI. I have learned small, yet helpful techniques to captivate an audience, much more than you can learn in a class room. For instance, there have been events, where I have had to take initiative and grab the mike and bring people to the stage or table where we were located, in order to make the promotion successful. Granted prior classes in public speaking have helped, but there is nothing like being live in front of hundreds of people and try to catch their attention. The key to it all is not necessarily to be calm at all times, however to be a little hype. You have to be serious of course; you still want people to think you are professional and respect you, but in a sense you have to become a personality. In my opinion, you can only learn to be captivating by trial and error, and by observing the ways of the on air talents themselves. In addition, I believe that just being in the environment has enhanced my people skills during other remotes and events, always preparing for the worst but expecting the best outcomes as well.
Overall, I consider this internship to have been successful. It has made me realize what I really want to do once I finish my studies, something that I was still unsure of prior to the internship. From here on out, I will continue to be involved in event coordinating and pursue a career in public relations and event coordinating.
